thawing commuters,
staring down the sunny street,
frightened of the light
it struck me that some people live in cities like this as a way of avoiding reality/thawing/whatever you want to call it. cities are grey places that desperately need a thaw, but when the thaw comes it will be painful for many, so many continue to hide.
is that a bit philosophical for a friday morning? rob
Cheers, Rob — so true! What you’re saying reminds me of a scene in one of the Narnia books. One of the children, Eustace Scrubb, had turned into a dragon when he greedily tried to take a dragon’s treasure. Until this point, Eustace had been selfish and mean. At first, Eustace thought it would be fun to be a dragon, but it got lonely fast. When Aslan turned him back into a boy, Aslan had to peel away multiple layers of dragon skin using his claws. This was quite painful for Eustace.
Eustace became repentant when he realized the misery of his dragon-hood, so ultimately, when Aslan had peeled away all the layers of dragon, Eustace was able to rejoice at being a boy again, even though the process had been painful. For some in our cities, a thaw will be the same sort of process. Others, perhaps, will never recognize a thaw’s ultimate value, and will remain in the painful state of a partial thaw.
