My Best Golf Shot

This morning we played Ballyowen. A guy we were paired up with had a caddie. On one of the back nine par 3’s, the caddie advised us to aim for a little rise just to the back of the green. I hit a perfect 9-iron just to that spot, the ball curved in from behind the pin, and stopped just a bit more than a foot short of a hole-in-one. Best golf shot I ever hit!

My best was a 30-foot putt from the fringe that I drained, the first time I was ever even on a golf course. After making that putt, I handed the putter to the guy who owned it, and vowed never to pick up a club again. 🙂

Precisely. I actually was certain when I hit the ball that I had hit it both too hard and too far to the left. But it did that beautiful TeeVee arc and dropped right into the cup. The other five who were with me (we were a group of six playing essentially a four-person scramble, taking turns) just went wild.

I had actually made two good shots in a row. The previous shot, I had chipped the ball over a bunker to get it up onto the green. It landed right where I wanted it. If I had put a little more backspin on it (like I’d know how to do that), it would have likely settled within a few feet of the pin.

The shot before that was from the same spot — I missed the ball completely.

A friend of mine had earlier in the day told me that if you make three good golf shots in a row, you’ll be hooked for life. I can’t afford golf as a hobby, so after the second good shot, I handed the club over and didn’t touch one the rest of the day. Those shots were only on 12 or 13.

I had previously resolved not to go mini-golfing any more when I went mini-golfing for marriage: She wins, we have to get married. I win, we don’t. I lost. But I did keep my word, even if several years later…
