Auschwitz

Today I visited the Auschwitz museum outside Krakow, Poland.  There’s not much intelligent I can say about it at the moment.  Probably there’s not much intelligent anyone can say about it.   Anyone who wants to teach about the rule of law, and anyone who wants to talk about God, should have to visit this place.  No theory of public life and no theology that fails to look this place in the face is worth any attention.

Having visited Auschwitz in 1974 I have some idea of the impact. For me Auschwitz permanently scars the soul and illustrates the potential for evil in the heart of man and especially myself. I can’t get away from thinking about the room full of human hair or eye glasses. Very sobering!

It is certainly a very small world. I have happened on your blog via seeing and very much enjoying your posts and comments at BioLogos and Jesus Creed. My daughter was at a conference in Krakow last week and visited Auschwitz the same day you did. She is not an particularly emotional person (she is a mathematician) but commented on the hair and the shoes and how stunning it was to think that they represented only a small portion of the individuals slaughtered there.
