{"id":1005,"date":"2009-11-16T11:06:56","date_gmt":"2009-11-16T18:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tgdarkly.com\/blog\/?p=1005"},"modified":"2009-11-16T11:06:56","modified_gmt":"2009-11-16T18:06:56","slug":"reflections-on-the-religious-legal-theory-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidopderbeck.com\/tgdarkly\/2009\/11\/16\/reflections-on-the-religious-legal-theory-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on the Religious Legal Theory Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we held the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.shu.edu\/About\/News_Events\/lawfaithculture\/index.cfm\">Religious Legal Theory:\u00a0 The State of the Field<\/a> conference at the law school.\u00a0 I&#8217;m incredibly gratified at how the conference went.\u00a0 Organizing this conference was, in fact, one of the most satisfying projects of my professional career.<\/p>\n<p>This was a unique conference in that we focused on legal theory from an ecumenically religious perspective.\u00a0\u00a0 The keynote speakers included Christian, Jewish, and Muslim scholars, and presenters included Catholics, Evangelicals, Presbyterians, Mormons,\u00a0 Buddhists, and others.\u00a0 None of the speakers or presenters minimized their own faith distinctives &#8212; indeed, many of the presentations were explicitly theological &#8212; and yet we found common ground in the desire to develop legal theory that acknowledges, celebrates, and integrates religious distinctives.\u00a0 It was a thrill to see all these diverse scholars interacting with each other in peace.\u00a0 This mood was summarized nicely by a scripture I read at the start of the conference&#8217;s second day:\u00a0 <em>And the word of the Lord came again to Zechariah:\u00a0 &#8220;This is what the Lord Almighty says:\u00a0 &#8216;Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.
