{"id":2257,"date":"2011-08-30T09:27:10","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T16:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tgdarkly.com\/blog\/?p=2257"},"modified":"2011-08-30T09:27:10","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T16:27:10","slug":"reading-revelation-responsibly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidopderbeck.com\/tgdarkly\/2011\/08\/30\/reading-revelation-responsibly\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading Revelation Responsibly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a video promo for an adult education class I&#8217;ll be teaching in October at my church.\u00a0 Below the video clip is a blurb about the class.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g-Qc4ihuaCI\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"345\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Revelation is a strange and often frightening text.\u00a0 Christians have struggled for almost two thousand years to understand it.\u00a0 Today, it is often used to support detailed scenarios of what will happen in the \u201cend times.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps you\u2019ve read novels or seen movies that take this popular approach.<\/p>\n<p>While these books and movies can be entertaining, they probably don\u2019t have very much to do with what the text of Revelation meant in its original context, or with what it might mean for us today.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll explore the thought world in which the text was produced \u2014 the genre of \u201capocalyptic\u201d literature, particularly among Jewish people in the first century A.D. \u2014 to gain insights about the meaning of the text to its first hearers.\u00a0 Then we\u2019ll consider how the horizons of the text relate to the horizons of our contemporary understanding and concerns.<\/p>\n<p>We won\u2019t try to produce a final or complete interpretation of the mysteries contained in this text.\u00a0 Instead, we\u2019ll come to appreciate that, like all of scripture, this text points to the glory and beauty of Jesus Christ, the hope of all creation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is a video promo for an adult education class I&#8217;ll be teaching in October at my church.\u00a0 Below the video clip is a blurb about the class.
