{"id":2590,"date":"2013-06-28T07:52:20","date_gmt":"2013-06-28T14:52:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tgdarkly.com\/blog\/?p=2585"},"modified":"2013-06-28T07:52:20","modified_gmt":"2013-06-28T14:52:20","slug":"job-behold-these-are-the-fringes-of-his-ways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davidopderbeck.com\/tgdarkly\/2013\/06\/28\/job-behold-these-are-the-fringes-of-his-ways\/","title":{"rendered":"Job:  &quot;Behold, These are the Fringes of His Ways&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgsrc.hubblesite.org\/hu\/db\/images\/hs-2001-08-e-web.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"M82, IMG SRC= http:\/\/hubblesite.org\/gallery\/album\/galaxy\/pr2001008e\/\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgsrc.hubblesite.org\/hu\/db\/images\/hs-2001-08-e-web.jpg?resize=400%2C266\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a>Chapters 26 and 27 of the book of Job provide a sort of pivot in the text.\u00a0 In his responses to his friends, Job&#8217;s sense of God&#8217;s ineffability seems to expand, while his sense of his ability to demand answers from God seems to shrink.\u00a0 Job continues to maintain his righteousness, to be sure, and in Chapter 27, he even seems to echo the retribution theology of his friends.<a href=\"#footnote1\">[1]<\/a> But in Chapter 26, Job confronts his friends with the vastness of God&#8217;s creation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He stretches out the north over empty space<br \/>\nAnd hangs the earth on nothing.<br \/>\nHe wraps up the waters in His clouds,<br \/>\nAnd the cloud does not burst under them.<br \/>\nHe obscures the face of the full moon<br \/>\nAnd spreads His cloud over it.<br \/>\nHe has inscribed a circle on the surface of<br \/>\nthe waters<br \/>\nAt the boundary of light and darkness.\u00a0 (Job 26:7-10 NASB)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even these wonders, however, only hint at God&#8217;s greatness:\u00a0 &#8220;Behold,&#8221; Job says,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>these are the fringes of His ways;<br \/>\nAnd how faint a word we hear of Him!<br \/>\nBut His mighty thunder, who can<br \/>\nunderstand?\u00a0 (Job 26:14)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The picture above is of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Messier_82\">Messier 82<\/a>, a galaxy in Ursa Major.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve observed it through my big telescope in a dark sky, and it appears much like the picture &#8212; a long, thin, fuzzy patch of light.\u00a0 M82 is a &#8220;starburst&#8221; galaxy, meaning it contains regions that produce new stars.\u00a0 In fact, M82 contains <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/startswithabang\/2013\/05\/13\/messier-monday-the-cigar-galaxy-m82\/\">197 different star-forming regions<\/a>, each of which is as massive as 200,000 of our Suns.\u00a0 At the center of this galaxy, there is a black hole that is as massive as 30 million of our Suns.\u00a0 It also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn18775-mysterious-radio-waves-emitted-from-nearby-galaxy.html#.Uc2a75wkAa4\">contains an object<\/a> that seems to move at four times the speed of light and that sends out radio waves unlike anything else ever discovered in the universe, which scientists remain unable to identify.<\/p>\n<p>So that fuzzy patch of light in the telescope is a galaxy of billions of stars, that is actively spewing out millions of new stars, with a gaping black hole at its center and a warp-speed unidentified object traversing its bounds.\u00a0 And all of that is just a small part of &#8220;the fringes of His ways.&#8221;\u00a0 I look at the Hubble photograph or through my telescope and it is as though I&#8217;m the sick, bleeding woman who reached out to touch the fringe of Jesus&#8217; robe in the hope she would be healed (see <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/nasb\/matthew\/9.htm\">Matthew 9:20<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;fringe&#8221; in Matthew 9 refers to <a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/numbers\/15-38.htm\">tassels that Jewish men wore<\/a> to remind them of the <em>Torah<\/em>. \u00a0 The word used in Job 26:14 is<a href=\"http:\/\/biblesuite.com\/hebrew\/ketzot_7098.htm\"><em> ketzot<\/em><\/a>, which refers to the edge or far end of a thing.\u00a0 The &#8220;tassels&#8221; in Numbers 15:38 are <a href=\"http:\/\/biblesuite.com\/hebrew\/tzitzit_6734.htm\">tzitzit<\/a>, an unrelated term, so there is no direct linguistic parallel.\u00a0 Still, I like the parallel concept of the &#8220;fringe&#8221; or &#8220;far end&#8221; as a reminder of God&#8217;s distance.\u00a0 It is an infinite distance that God nevertheless allows us to glimpse and touch, if only at the fringe, through His creation, His Law, and His incarnation in Christ.\u00a0 Just that glimpse and touch are enough to settle the mind and stop the bleeding, even if &#8212;
